BOTW #13 - $20

Monday, February 25, 2008

$20

A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20.00 note in a room of 200 people and asked, 'Who would like this $20 bill?'

Hands started going up.

He said, 'I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this.' He proceeded to crumple up the $20 dollar bill .

He then asked, 'Who still wants it?'

Still the hands were up in the air.

He replied, 'Well, what if I do this?' And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty.

'Now, who still wants it?'

Still the hands went into the air.
Then he said, 'My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20.'

BOTW #12 - A Voyaging Ship

Monday, February 18, 2008

A Voyaging Ship

A voyaging ship was wrecked during a storm at sea and only two of the men on it were able to swim to a small, desert like island.

The two survivors, not knowing what else to do, agree that they had no other recourse but to pray to God. However, to find out whose prayer was more powerful, they agreed to divide the territory between them and stay on opposite sides of the island.

The first thing the first man prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the land, and he was able to eat its fruit. The other man's parcel of land remained barren.

After a week, the first man was lonely and he decided to pray for a wife. The next day, another ship was wrecked, and the only survivor was a woman who swam to his side of the land. On the other side of the island, there was nothing.
Soon the first man prayed for a house, clothes, more food. The next day, like magic, all of these were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing.
Finally, the first man prayed for a ship, so that his wife and he could leave the island. In the morning, he found a ship docked at his side of the island. The first man boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island. He considered the other man unworthy to receive God’s blessings, since none of his prayers had been answered.

As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from Heaven booming, "Why are you leaving your companion on the island?" “My blessings are mine alone, since I was the one who prayed for them," the first man answered. "His prayers were all unanswered, and so he does not deserve anything."

“You are mistaken!" the voice rebuked him. "He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings."
"Tell me," The first man asked the voice, "What did he pray for that I should owe him anything?"

“He prayed that all your prayers be answered."

For all we know, our blessings are not the fruits of our prayers alone, but those of another praying for us. When Jesus died on the cross he was thinking of you!

Cybergaming IHC

Friday, February 15, 2008

This week marks the start of IHC season, and we begin off with a bang indeed, with the very first IHC being Cybergaming IHC which consists of two parts, Counterstrike and DoTA! Cybergaming was spread out over a few days this week, and almost everyday Computer Lab 7 was brimming with avid fans of CS and DoTA :)

For Counterstrike, both our J1 and J2 teams fought hard, and our J2 team managed to get through to the second round after the first day! However, the opponents were hard to defeat the next day, and BB did not manage to make it through to the next round.

For DoTA, both our J1 and J2 teams did a great job and managed to defeat both their opponents on their first match! It was hard to do so for the next round though, and both teams did not get through to the semi-finals.

However, it was a good effort by all teams anyway! All our enthusiastic players were all training hard the week before :) Well done BB players! Here are the overall results for Cybergaming, after totalling up the scores for both CS and DoTA:

First: BW
Second: MR
Third: MT
Fourth: BB
Fifth: HH

Thank you again to all our BB players, and to all the supporters who came down as well! Hope everyone had fun during Cybergaming IHC! :) To end off, here's a picture of our J2 DoTA team :)

BOTW #11 - Who You Love

Monday, February 11, 2008

Who You Love

John Blanchard stood up from the bench, straightened his Army uniform, and studied the crowd of people making their way through Grand Central Station. He looked for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl with the rose. His interest in her had begun thirteen months before in a Florida library. Taking a book off the shelf he found himself intrigued, not with the words of the book, but with the notes penciled in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind.In front of the book, he discovered the previous owner’s name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he located her address. She lived in New York City. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond. The next day he was shipped overseas for service in World War II

During the next year and one-month the two grew to know each other through the mail. Each letter was a seed falling on a fertile heart. A Romance was budding. Blanchard requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn’t matter what she looked like.

When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first meeting - 7:00 pm at Grand Central Station in New York.

“You’ll recognize me, ” she wrote, “by the red rose I’ll be wearing on my lapel.” So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for a girl whose heart he loved, but whose face he’d never seen.

I’ll let Mr. Blanchard tell you what happened: A young women was coming toward me, her figure long and slim. Her blonde hair lay back in curls from her delicate ears; her eyes were blue as flowers. Her lips and chin had a gentle firmness, and in her pale green suit she was like springtime come alive. I started toward her, entirely forgetting to notice that she was not wearing a rose. As I moved, a small, provocative smile curved her lips. “Going my way, sailor?” she murmured. Almost uncontrollably I made one step closer to her, and then I saw Hollis Maynell. She was standing almost directly behind the girl. A women well past 40, she had graying hair tucked under a worn hat. She was more than plump, her thick-ankled feet thrust into low-heeled shoes. The girl in the green suit was walking quickly away. I felt as though I split in two, so keen was my desire to follow her, and yet so deep was my longing for the women whose spirit had truly companioned me and upheld my own.

And there she stood. Her pale, plump face was gentle and sensible, her gray eyes had a warm and kindly twinkle. I did not hesitate. My fingers gripped the small worn blue leather copy of the book that was something precious, something perhaps even better than love, a friendship for which I had been and must ever be grateful.

I squared my shoulders and saluted and held out the book to the women, even though while I spoke I felt choked by the bitterness of my disappointment. “I’m Lieutenant John Blanchard, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?”

The women’s face broadened into a tolerant smile. “I don’t know what this is about, son,” she answered, “but the young lady in the green suit who just went by, she begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should go and tell you that she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!”

It’s not difficult to understand and admire Miss Maynell’s wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in it’s response to the unattractive. “Tell me whom you love,” Houssaye wrote, “And I will tell you who you are.”

OMG #4 - The Final One!

Friday, February 8, 2008

Hi BB-ians! Here's a post about our very last One Month of Games which happened on 1st Feb! Anyway so the music started playing in the amphi at 3.30pm but people came down late, so the game itself (captain's ball as usual! :D) started about 3.45pm! However for this game we changed the balls, so there was the soft volleyball, some small squashy yellow ball, a rugby ball and a pingpong ball (which everybody protested against!) Here are some shots of people in action...

Everyone had lots of fun running around and jumping and scrambling on the floor for the balls! After that we were all tired out so we had a break, allowing everyone to cool down and take a drink, chitchat...

When everyone was well rested, we started off the second half of the OMG! To end things off with a bang, we had decided to organise a mass game for everyone who went down :D so we played Twin Towers! Basically there was lots of running around in the amphi until everyone was tired out and sweaty...

After that we had a forfeit session which was dancing the batch dance! But then everybody was sparked off by the lively music and recollections of their wonderful orientation, so we all started dancing together :D (sorry no photos but video available on request!) After that even though we had to keep the logs and return it all, most of the BB-ians there stayed back to talk and play their own games!

Yup and that was the end of One Month of Games every Friday! And here's a message from the organisers: To all the BB-ians who went down and supported it enthusiastically, hope you all had lots of fun and took the opportunity to make many new friends from your house!!! :)

BOTW #10 - Slow Dance

Saturday, February 2, 2008

Slow Dance
Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask How are you?
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?

You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die

Cause you never had time
To call and say,'Hi'

You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift...Thrown away.

Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.
